Beginning with a special Historically Black College and University (HBCU) Experience February 2, Creative Greensboro, the City's office for arts and culture, will again host First Friday events at the Greensboro Cultural Center, located in the heart of Downtown Greensboro's cultural district. These vibrant monthly celebrations bring together the local arts community, featuring four open art galleries, an artist residency, live performances, and opportunities to support local creatives and businesses.

To kick off the festivities in honor of Black History Month, Creative Greensboro has curated an HBCU Experience. NC A&T State University and Bennett College student organizations and alumni will activate the building with a variety of art and cultural showcases and performances.

Event Highlights

• Representatives from historically Black fraternities and sororities will share insights into their impactful work and commitment to uplifting and promoting community.
• A strolling showcase by Black sororities and fraternities
• Live dance performance by the talented A&T plus-size majorette dance team, Liquid Gold, followed by a majorette dance class in collaboration with Dance Project
• Painting with local artist and A&T graduate Jalen Jackson in collaboration with GreenHill Gallery
• The African American Atelier presents “A Living Museum” experience featuring Clement Mallory of Kids Poetry Basketball Inc. accompanied by a drum and dance performance.
• The Center for Visual Artists hosts the “We Art Greensboro 2024: Structure” exhibit opening reception with Collective GSO freestyle street dancers and HBCU alumni.
• Artist in residence and A&T alumnus Sharon Graeber will have an art exhibition and artist talk in the GROW (Greensboro Residency for Original Works) space.
• Art Alliance will host a collaborative painting project led by A&T graduate Lionel Brown.
• The Guilford Native American Art Gallery will provide henna body art offered by J. Egan Design.
• Music will be provided by A&T student DJ ISO with A&T alumnus DerriQ J as our emcee.
• The student organization Aggie Art Alliance will share its work for student creatives.
• Bennett College Admissions advisors will share information about their programs.
• Collective GSO will create an “HBCU Student Union lounge” with video game stations.

In addition to all of these experiences, there will be a vendor fair featuring HBCU students and Black-owned businesses offering custom clothing, jewelry, and art. The Smokiin Mac food truck will be onsite, and attendees can enjoy complimentary food including a hot chocolate station, mini sliders and desserts provided by Secret Ingredient Catered Events.

“Greensboro is the home of two amazing HBCUs. As a City, we want to celebrate this rich history and elevate their significance, impact, and culture within the broader Greensboro community,” says Jocquelyn Boone, chief creative economy officer at Creative Greensboro.
