S. “Shree” Dorestant, DM, the City’s Chief Sustainability Officer, is the featured speaker at the October 26 meeting of the Ad-hoc Committee on African American Disparity (ACAAD). The event is the first of two monthly, virtual meetings dedicated to environmental justice issues.
The public is welcome to attend the 6 pm meeting on Zoom (Meeting ID: 915 1305 6243). Dorestant will consider the concept and challenges of sustainability within the Black community and discuss ways residents can advocate change.
Dorestant returned to the City in 2022 to lead the newly created Office of Sustainability and Resilience, which helps the City and its residents become more environmentally, economically, and socially sustainable. She worked as a regulatory compliance specialist in the City’s Water Resources Department from 2007-15 before serving seven years with the New York City Department of Environmental Protection.
An Alabama native, Dorestant received a Doctor of Management in environmental and social sustainability at Colorado Technical University. She also earned a Master of Public Administration degree in water resource management and policy and a Bachelor of Science in biology from Albany State (Ga.) University.
The second program of the environmental justice series is November 16 when City Transportation Director Hanna Cockburn speaks on the impact of interstates and highways within Black communities.
The ACAAD seeks to address barriers that prevent the success of Greensboro’s African American residents. The committee researches policies and procedures, obtains community feedback, and recommends to the City Council how to improve access to resources for the city’s African-American population.
