In the woods behind Guilford College stands a silent witness to history; a 300-year-old tulip poplar whose roots run deep beneath a section of the Underground Railroad. A trail leading to the tree simulates the route Freedom Seekers navigated through the woods of Guilford County with assistance from free and enslaved African-Americans and European-American allies. The trail is open to the public and is well-marked for self-guided tours.
