From February 1, 2023 post.
“Black Resistance” is this year’s official theme for February’s Black History Month observation, dedicated to the legacy of African American culture in America. Guilford County Government would like to join with our municipal, educational, business, non-profit, religious, and state partners, and others to spotlight the outstanding achievements of African American culture that are not only the cornerstone, but the bedrock foundation that American civilization is built upon.
Though it was only celebrated for a week until 1976, with events starting on Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday in mid-January, Guilford County Government duly notes that it’s “More Than a Month.”
Observed in the U.S. and other parts of the world, Black History Month events encourage community members to reflect on what they can do to better confront racism and oppression. These offerings help honor the legacy of prominent voices, as well as provide resources for community building through social action, lectures, live performances, visual arts and more.
We encourage our residents and citizens to take the time to enjoy the numerous activities, programs, events, and performances taking place throughout our community as we celebrate Black History Month.
