Post-graduation plans: Ouellette will be working with the Players’ Lounge as a junior software engineer in Brooklyn, New York. His responsibility is to create new software in an agile environment and he is constantly focusing on problems that arise to fixing them and finish new software releases.
How HPU helped you get there: “High Point University helped me to get where I am today by teaching from the bottom up, starting with the basic fundamentals. HPU also gave me a variety of options with elective classes that helped me to decide which career path I wanted to take with my degree.”
Most impactful mentor at HPU: “Dr. William Suchan, founding chair and associate professor of computer science, was the most impactful for me because he my professor in many classes, but also my advisor. He guided me with the classes that I wanted to take and knew what these classes would consist of. He also made it clear that he cares about his students, and showed it both in class and with his availability outside of class. He is reassuring and truly believes in his students.”
Most impactful moment at HPU: “My most impactful moment was when my group presented our final project for our Software Engineering course, which was an air traffic control simulator.”
What are the life skills HPU helped you develop that prepared you for long-term success? “I learned the technical information needed to complete interviews where I am asked questions on computer science topics, such as development software engineer and assessments on coding skills.”
What are the values and virtues HPU’s campus helped you develop that you’ll take with you after graduation? “Some of the values and virtues I learned are how to live on my own and be responsible for myself.”
Advice for underclassmen: “My advice for underclassmen is to listen to and trust your professors. They have the experience and knowledge to guide you in the right direction when it comes to getting a job after graduation.”
