Ribbon cutting and public event, Guilford Technical Community College's Medlin Campus Center celebrated a ceremonial grand-reopening after an extensive renovation project.
The 127,000 square foot building, which was built in the early 1970s, was stripped back to its original concrete structure and built back with all the infrastructure and amenities needed for today's college students and administrators.
Thomas A. Stith III, president of the North Carolina Community College System, praised the project after taking part in the ceremonial ribbon cutting to signify the building's reopening.
"Guilford Technical Community College generates over $542 million in added income for the Guilford County economy, which translates into one out of every 44 jobs in this county being supported by the activities of this community college and its students," Stith said. "The rapid growth of this region has only intensified, and this expansion project better positions GTCC to continue meeting the workforce needs of this area while providing the education needed for students to get good-paying jobs upon graduation."
The goal of the renovation was to create a facility that would carry GTCC forward for the next 20 years. Large, open floor plans with modular wall systems were used to provide flexibility for future needs. All walls, finishes, and HVAC systems were replaced along with all data and electrical connections.
"The new Medlin Campus Center gives our students an extra advantage in their educational process at Guilford Technical Community College," said GTCC President Anthony Clarke, Ph.D. "It is a state-of-the art student services building that can transform as the college changes to serve our students. We're excited to see the students, faculty, and staff embrace the newly refreshed facility that demonstrates GTCC's commitment to our students and their success."
The renovated four-story Medlin Campus Center will be used for a variety of services. The bottom floor houses the bookstore, café, multiple study areas, student life and student government. Admissions, veteran's resource center and several study nooks and seating areas for students reside on the second floor. The third floor has the financial aid office, student success center, counseling center along with some administration offices, with the top floor dedicated to college administration and the president's office and executive board room.
