University of North Carolina at Greensboro issued the following announcement on Sept. 9.
Calling all sophomores – UNCG is throwing a special welcome back celebration just for you!
Because the Class of 2024 missed out on a traditional fall semester last year, the Division of Student Success and Student Affairs are hosting a Sophomore Kick-off and a Sophomore Symposium to provide second-year students with a sense of belonging and connect them with key support resources.
“Our sophomores need and deserve dedicated time to feel welcomed to campus since they missed so much during their entire first year,” said Dr. Kim Sousa Peoples, senior director of First-Year Experience and Engagement. “We want them to get quickly connected to people and resources to further ensure their academic success.”
The Sophomore Kick-Off will take place on Sept. 14 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Room 510 of the Nursing Instructional Building. Students who drop by anytime between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. will be treated to a back-to-school supply kit, sweet treats, and more. They will also have the opportunity to meet staff from Career and Professional Development, the Academic Achievement Center, and sponsors of the upcoming Sophomore Symposium events. Throughout the day, VIPs from across campus will stop by to greet and welcome back our sophomores.
The Sophomore Symposium is a series of programs and events to help sophomores develop a sense of belonging while participating in activities that focus on student wellness, campus engagement, and stress management. Upcoming events include a scavenger hunt, Sophomore Night at the Greensboro Grasshoppers, a leadership symposium, and more.

“We’re so proud of how hard these students worked last year to stay focused and determined in an unexpected virtual learning environment, not to mention the stress of navigating life during COVID-19,” said Sousa-Peoples. “They entered an iconic moment in life, heading off to college without any of the traditional fanfare and onboarding, and we want them to know they are not forgotten!”
