The state Department of Health and Human Services is asking six Triad counties to step-up their efforts to slow the spread of COVID-19 throughout their communities.

The state department sent the counties a follow-up request letter because the jurisdictions met benchmarks that suggest COVID-19 are not declining, such as having at 300 new cases in a 14-day period and identified by the White House Task Force as a concern, among other metrics, WFMY 2 News reported in October

The counties of concern are Alamance, Caswell, Guilford, Davidson, Randolph and Rockingham.

"Randolph County Public Health has been working extremely hard, but there is only so much we can do. We've had support and help from our community partners, but everyone is tired," Randolph County Health Director Susan Hayes said, WFMY 2 reported. "We especially need support from those in positions of leadership and authority. So yes, as stated in the letter from Secretary Cohen and Secretary Hooks, there are other things that can be done."

The state department letter provided suggestions to help the counties lower their COVID-19 numbers, such as fining businesses that don't enforce the wearing of masks and further limiting restaurant services.

"The COVID-19 pandemic remains a global public health threat whose harmful effects have been felt across the nation and here in Guilford County," Guilford County said in a release, WFMY 2 reported, "One way to help limit community spread of the virus is for people to take basic safety precautions to protect their personal health and the people around them."
