North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey visited firefighters in Stallings, where he promoted the value of the state’s matching grant program for fire departments.
“I can’t tell you how many fire chiefs I’ve met and talked with that told me had it not been for the matching grants program, they would have closed their doors years ago,” Causey said, the Union County Weekly reported on Sept. 26. “It’s that important.”
This year, the North Carolina Department of Insurance awarded $8.5 million in matching grants to fire departments, the commissioner said, Union County Weekly reported. He has asked the state Legislature to increase funding for the program because of the need he has seen in the state, the story said.
In May, Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina donated $500,000 to help rural volunteer fire departments across the state, Causey said, the Union County Weekly reported.
During his visit, Causey presented the Monroe Fire Department with an award for an “above and beyond action” taken to save a life, Union County Weekly reported.
