It's a staggering amount of money, but Guilford County educational officials estimated that it might cost $100 million to send students back to school in the fall.
The $100-million projection is based on guidelines and requirements North Carolina released in preparation for students and staff returning for in-class instruction to limit the risk of someone catching COVID-19 while in school, WFMY 2 News reported on June 11. Guilford County education officials linked the district's estimated cost primarily to socially distancing safely.
"The question is, is this possible, that's what superintendents all over America are asking," Guilford County Superintendent Sharon Contreas told WFMY 2. "It doesn't seem practical at the moment, but we are seeing what we can do."
The superintendent told WFMY 2 News that the district is using the time it has before opening to determine capacity for instruction in a COVID-19 environment. The analysis could result in some students who attended one school are moved to a larger building that can properly socially distance with more learners.
