The City’s Solid Waste and Recycling Department will stop accepting yard waste in plastic bags beginning on Friday, March 1. Residents may use biodegradable paper bags for leaves or other yard waste.
Large paper yard waste bags are available at retailers and online. The bags are designed to hold up to a bit of rainy weather. City tests have shown they can last up to seven days of heavy moisture. Paper bags from the grocery store, however, won't stand up to rain.
This change in policy is part of a larger shift in yard waste rules this year.
Yard Waste Changes
- Beginning March 1, 2024: No plastic bags will be accepted. Bundles of sticks, less than 5-ft long and 50-lbs, may be put out each week, and personal yard waste bins or carts may be used. The City will collect up to 10 items (a combination of bags and bundles) per house per week.
- Beginning Spring 2024: Customers will receive a City-provided, 95-gallon, gray rolling cart for leaves and yard waste. The cart will be collected weekly on residents’ regular collection day. Residents may decline the cart by March 31. Residents may also purchase a second 95-gallon yard waste cart for $65 by calling the City Contact Center at 336-373-CITY (2489).
- July 1, 2024: Effective this date, the City will no longer collect personal yard waste bins/carts.
- November 1, 2024: Leaf season begins. The City will now accept up to 15 items (a combination of paper yard waste bags and bundles of sticks) per household per week in addition to yard waste in the 95-gallon cart.
- February 2025: Leaf season ends after the second week in February. Item limit reduces to 10 per week per household. The City will continue to collect the 95-gallon yard waste bin, which may include leaves.
