A recent political ad targeting Sen. Thom Tillis (R-NC) has been shown to rely on a false presentation of an illustration he gave in 2015 to attempt to claim Republican senator is against hand washing during the COVID-19 pandemic.
A fact check by WRAL for a July 24 report found that Tillis remarked at a 2015 Bipartisan Policy Center event that, absent state regulation of handwashing in restaurants, if restaurants were only required to post whether or not they required employees to wash their hands, market forces would lead them to enforce hand washing simply to retain customers.
The ad was reportedly made by the Majority Forward PAC. Tillis is in a tight race against Democratic challenger Cal Cunningham to keep his Senate seat.
“I don't have any problem with Starbucks if they choose to opt-out of this policy, as long as they post a sign that says, 'We don't require our employees to wash their hands after leaving the restroom,’” Tillis is quoted as saying by WRAL. “The market will take care of that.”
A post to the North Carolina Republican Party website citing the WRAL report states that the Republicans found the misleading ad from Majority Forward PAC to be, “no surprise.”
