Meridian Center was recognized as Guilford County’s second largest nursing home during the first quarter of 2026, according to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS).

Statistics indicate the facility offered 199 beds, 85 more than the county average for that period. Meridian Center accommodated an average of 166 residents during the quarter.

The center received an overall rating of 1 out of 5 from CMS, falling short of the statewide average rating of 2.9 for North Carolina nursing homes.

For that period, Maple Grove Health and Rehabilitation Center led the county with 210 beds available, while Shannon Gray Rehabilitation & Recovery Center ranked third with 150 beds.

By the end of Q1 2026, Meridian Center incurred $88,566 in fines across five violations and was subject to five total penalties.

Altogether, Guilford County, North Carolina, had 15 for-profit nursing homes.

According to U.S. Census Bureau estimates, the size of the nation’s older adult population is rising while younger demographics experience declines. Between 2020 and 2024, the American population age 65 and older grew by 13%, compared to a 1.7% reduction in the population under age 18. The country’s older adult population has expanded substantially over the last century, from 4.9 million in 1920 to over 61 million in 2024.

A 2021 study found that nearly half of the older adult population—about 28 million people—may need long-term services and support, and over a third are expected to eventually require nursing home care.

“Living a long life is something that many of us want and could get,” said Jesse Slome, executive director of the American Association for Long-Term Care Insurance, an insurance education organization. “But when we live a long life, the chances of us needing long-term care increase exponentially. But when you need that type of care, there are limited options.”
