Guilford County issued the following announcement on Jan. 15.

In preparation for potential impacts of the forecasted winter storm predicted to move through the area this weekend, the Guilford County Division of Public Health (GCDPH) would like to remind the public of the following safety tips. For a detailed list, visit www.ready.gov/winter- weather.

General:

  • Gather supplies in case you need to stay home for several days without power. Keep in mind each person’s specific needs, including medication, food, batteries, and flashlights.
  • Check on your neighbors. Older adults and young children are more at risk in extreme cold.
  • Monitor weather alerts and have a preparedness kit ready.
  • Create an emergency supply kit for your car. Include jumper cables, sand, a flashlight, warm clothes, blankets, bottled water, and non-perishable snacks. Keep your gas tank full.

Electricity & Heating:

  • NEVER use a generator, camp stove, charcoal grill, gasoline, or propane heater indoors.
  • Keep generators outside at least 20 feet away from doors, windows, and vents to avoid accidental CO poisoning.

Outdoors & Traveling:

  • Stay off roads during and after a winter storm.
  • Dress in layers, cover skin and limit time outside.
  • Shoveling snow can be a health risk, so remember to take it easy.

Pets:

  • Bring your furry friends inside when temperatures take a dip.
