Local establishment Buddys Bar and Saloon was shut down without notice by the North Carolina Alcoholic Beverage Control System Commission, according to the North Carolina Bar Owners Association.
According to the NCBOA’s statement, over 120 bars in North Carolina had their licenses canceled without notice in January. In a written response from the North Carolina ABC, they explain that a review and termination of licenses with unpaid fees is standard practice. Due to the pandemic this year, the North Carolina ABC is transitioning these licenses to an inactive status so that bar owners don’t have to go through the entire onboarding process when they do renew.
These closures could have a large impact on local economies. The National Restaurant Association estimates that every dollar spent in tableside service contributes $1.89 to North Carolina’s economy. They also note that the state’s restaurant and foodservice industry employs about 11-percent of the state’s workforce.
