Board Signals Intent to Align with County on Redistricting

Guilford County Schools issued the following announcement on Oct. 27.

Guilford County Board of Education electoral district boundaries should stay aligned with those of the Guilford County Board of Commissioners, if possible, the school board decided Wednesday.

The Guilford County Board of Commissioners is redrawing its electoral districts following new demographic data from the 2020 Census. The Board of Education must also update its districts based on Census results and voted Wednesday to declare its intention to adopt the district map approved by the Board of County Commissioners. That approval is scheduled to take place on Nov. 4.

The county is considering five potential maps, which can be viewed here.

Following the county’s vote on Nov. 4, the Board of Education will take up the issue at its Nov. 6 retreat. At that meeting, the board will vote either to accept the county’s chosen map or propose different maps for consideration at the Nov. 9 Board of Education meeting.

Senate Bill 317, which was passed in 2013, redrew the Board of Education districts to match the lines of the Board of County Commissioners. That change, which also reduced the number of board members from 11 to nine and make the elections partisan, took effect in 2016.
